  • Laowa 105mm f/2 (t/3.2) Smooth Trans Focus Lens – ‘the Bokeh Dreamer’

Anhui China, Mar 10, 2016 – Venus Optics, the Chinese camera lenses manufacturer who had launched the world’s Widest 1:1 Macro lens last June, has just released another extraordinary lens, Laowa 105mm f/2 (t/3.2) Smooth Trans Focus Lens for DSLR cameras.

The new Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus Lens incorporates an unique optical design with an apodization (APD) element next to the aperture. The APD element resembles the function of an ND filter which becomes thicker towards the perimeter, gradually reducing the amount of light transmission towards the periphery to produce a soft, natural and beautifully diffused out-of-focus rendition (or called bokeh).

    STF explanation

The new Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus Lens offers two separate diaphragms. The stepless 14-bladed perfectly circular aperture, in conjunction with the apodization element gives this lens the ability to produce smooth and pleasing bokeh. It is also useful for videographers to control the amount of light passes through the lens. The 8-bladed aperture is to determine the effective aperture opening (f-number) and the depth-of-field formed.

The lens houses with 11 elements in 8 groups with 1 piece of High Refractive elements, 3 pieces of Low Dispersion elements and 1pc of Apodisation element. This optical design is proven to deliver images with extreme sharpness and limit the chromatic abberations at its lowest. The enclosure of the lens is made of metal to strengthen its durability. Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony FE, Sony Alpha and Pentax K mounts are available.

  1. does the canon mount have electronic chip to communicate with the camera for focus confirm or is it all manual ? thanks

  2. Does the Sony A-Mount (a99) mount have electronic chip to communicate with the camera for focus confirm or is it all manual ?

    • We ship to Europe via Hong Kong Post e-Express for FREE. Or you may select UPS/Fedex/DHL shipping at a extra cost.

  3. hi when will the silver version be available, and if i choose the Sony FE version, say canon mount with a FE adaptor, will the adaptor be silver color as well?

    • The adapter will be in black. I will prefer you to choose the native FE version and everything will be in silver. Please remark onto the customer note. Thanks.

    • Sorry that it does not come with a focus confirmation chip. But you can use the focus confirmation dot mechanism in the camera body.

  4. If I order this 105mm f/2.0 with Canon EF mount can I then use it with an EF to Sony E-Mount adapter? This makes the lens much more flexible for me if it can fit both Canon DSLR and Sony Mirrorless cameras. Thanks in advance.

  5. Do the Canon or the native FE mount versions have electronic contacts to indicate the focal length to the camera? I understand that all other functions are manual.

    • Hi Sir, We do not have it with native Fuji X mount. However, you can use this lens in Fuji X system with a simple adapter. Thanks!

    • It takes around 10-14 days to get to Norway. Thanks. The 105mm STF lens will ship from late April onwards.

  6. HI,

I use APS and FF sensor cameras and want to know…..

    1. Will your new 12/2.8 lens have amy improvements over what is currently available in Canon and Nikon?

    2. Will the 12mm be Fisheye on FF sensors?

    3. Will it be weather sealed?

    4. When will it be available and the cost? .

    5. Do you have any outlets to see this lens in Australia?

    • 1. Our 12/2.8 is currently the widest f/2.8 lens in the market. With its less than 1% barrel distortion rate, I am sure it is one of the best wide angle lens in the market.
      2. No. It is NOT a fisheye and will have less than 1% distortion only.
      3. We have not tested it against different weather condition yet.
      4. Will available in summer 2016. Pricing TBC.
      5. Sorry that we currently do not have dealers in Australia.

  7. Hi. . I am from the Philippines. . Do you have any distributors here? I really love to get one of these! 🙂

    • Hi Sir, We currently do not have distributors in Philippines. However, you can buy it via our webstore and we ship to Philippines for FREE. Thanks.

  8. Any updates on E-mount shipping? We are in May now, and I read late April in the thread. Are they shipped?

  9. Does this Laowa 105mm f/2 (t/3.2) Smooth Trans Focus Lens fits my Nikon D800, I’ve been reading previous comments and I am not too sure. If it needs an adapter, what is the adapter name. Thanking you, and when is it shipping to the Netherlands?

    • Hi Robert, It fits your Nikon D800 perfectly. We will start shipping to our Netherlands distributor in around early June. Thanks.

  10. Hi. What adaptor is? How I can use it?
I have Sony A7R and A900, but first, I want to use this lens with A7R.

    • Hi Andrew,

You can either choose to buy the Sony FE mount then the lens can only be used in A7R. Or you can buy the Sony A mount + Sony A- Sony E adapter then your lens can be used in both system.

  11. Do your lenses fit Fujiffilm mirrorless cameras? I am getting the Fuji XT1-IR camera for astro photo work.

Any idea in Summer you will release the 12/2.8 lens?

What will its FOV be on a FF and APS-C sensor?

    • Yes. You can use our lenses in Fuji system with a simple adapter. Yes the 12/2.8 is aim at summer release. FOV will be 122 degrees in FF.

  12. I ordered this lens about a month ago, is the first shipment still on track for mid/late June? Thanks! The early reviews I see are looking very promising! Can’t wait to review and shoot with my copy as well!

  13. I’d like to use it on my Sony A7, is it all manual or I can still use functions like ‘Peak Focus’ that having on other MF lenses?

  14. Can you already predict when the A-Mount versions are shipped?

The t-aperture-ring (t/3.2-t/8) is complete manual. This will be the most common used one because of its 14 blades which are almost perfect round. Is the f-aperture ring connected to the camera-control as the STF from Sony/Minolta? Thanks!

    • Hi Sir,
If you wanna shoot still, you may use the f-ring.
If you wanna shoot video, you may use the t-ring.
If you use the f-ring, please leave the t-ring wide open. Vice versa.

  15. Are there any tests that show the difference between Laowa 105mm f/2 (t/3.2) STF Lens and a regular lens, regarding to the bokeh?

  16. Bought the EF mount; but the lens can’t be used on the A7ii nor EM-1 Mii (both via Metabones adapters).
Only a simple (no contact points) adapter to M43 works.
    Any comment?

    • It is because the focus-confirmation chip on the canon lens does not work with your Metabones adapter. You may consider taping/removing the chip
