The new Laowa 15mm f/4 1:1 Macro lens is the first lens in the market which posseses a ultra wide angle of view and 1:1 Macro ability. This allows photographers from around the world to start experiencing the rather undeveloped field of ‘Wide Angle Macro Photography’ without using a extension tube. Macro Lenses currently in the market tends to have a mid to long focal length and it limits users to take very close-up shots on the insect or flowers, without showing much of the background details like its habitat or environment.

The new Laowa 15mm f/4 1:1 Macro lens features an ultra wide angle of view of 110 degrees with 1:1 maximum magnification. Photographers can focus very close to the subject and let the foreground dominates in the photo but at the same time, have the background telling viewers about where and how the subject lives. You picture will immdiately become very informative and intriguing.

The lens can also serve as an excellent ultra-wide angle lenses with infinity focus for cameras with full frame sensors. A shift mechanism is added at the rear end of the lens with a maximum adjustment of +/- 6mm, which is extremely useful for landscape/architecture photography for distortion correction.

The lens houses with 12 elements in 9 groups with 3 pieces of High Refractive elements and 1 piece of Extra-low dispersion elements to deliver crystal sharpness both in the center and the edge. Barrel Distortion was also carefully controlled. 14 pieces of aperture blades form a close-to-circular aperture, capable of creating creamy shallow depth of view. The enclosure of the lens is made of metal to strengthen its durability. Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony A, Sony FE and Pentax K mounts are available.

  • – Lens Questions –

Q: Can this lens be used in Full Frame Cameras?

A: Yes. Our 15mm f/4 lens can cover the whole full frame camera sensor.

Q: Can this lens serve as a normal wide-angle lenses?

A: Yes. This lens is an excellent wide-angle lenses with very good control in barrel distortion and perimeter sharpness.

Q: What is the use of the SHIFT feature of the lens?

A: Shift is used to adjust the position of the subject in the image area without moving the camera back; this is often helpful in avoiding the convergence of parallel lines, as when photographing tall buildings. See below illustration.

SHIFT2 SHIFTQ: Can this SHIFT feature be used with a full frame camera body?

A: Yes but there will be mild vignetting when shift to the maximum under FF sensor. See below sample image. Lens hood + Filter have to be removed and aperture size to be reduced for easier shooting. No vignetting will be seen in APS-C sensor.

Q: Do you have Fuji X or MFT mounts for this lens? Can this lens be used in Mirrorless camera?

A: We currently do not have plans for making Fuji X / MFT mounts for this lens. However, you can still use this lens with a simple adapter. The lens can still work and there will be no impact on picture quality. If you are not clear how the adapter could work, please kindly contact us.

Q: Can I adjust the aperture readings in the camera body?

A: No. Since this is a full manual lens, the aperture can be selected by turning the aperture ring on the lens. No communications exists between the camera body and the lens.

Q: Do you have aperture coupling for Pentax K mount?

A: Sorry that the lens does not support aperture coupling but we will definitely consider it in the future lens design.

Q: What can we adjust on the lens?

A: There are two rings on the lens. The aperture ring and the focus ring. Aperture ring for adjusting the iris size and focus ring for adjusting the focus+magnification.

Q: Does this lens come with a warranty?

A: We currently offer 3-year warranty.

Q: Can the lens hood be detached?

A: Yes. It is detachable. More convenient for Macro shooting.

Q: Can a filter be installed onto the lens?

A: Yes. We understand filter may be needed for great landscape shots and so we have designed a flat surface to fit the filter.  Your can install the filter on this lens without a holder. The filter thread is 77mm.

Q: What is the difference of Sony FE mount vs NEX adaptor mount?

Sony FE mount is a native built-in FE mount which allows consumers to use in Sony A7 or NEX systems.

Sony NEX adaptor mount will come with a Canon/Nikon mount lens together with an adaptor so that users can use the lens in both Canon/Nikon DSLR and Sony A7/NEX mirrorless cameras.

  1. Good afternoon,
i am a fan of your lenses (already have the 60mm) and now i noticed there’s a 12 2.8 lens out. I would like to know if it is a full frame lens, and if and when it will be available for Sony E mount.

    Sincerely,
    Peter.

  2. Are you really talking about a 12mm full frame lens, f 2.8 ?
As a Nikon owner, I’m well eager to know more about it !
I’ll be more than happy to have an idea on how long we should wait for this new jewel !

    Thanks !
    Daniel

    • Sorry that we have no plans to make a native FX mount. However you can definitely use it in FX system with an adapter.

  3. I am interested 15 mm wide angle macro
lense .Is it avileble f 2.8 with nikon mount for FX lenss also shipping avileble in United Arab Emirates.

  4. Hello,

I am very interested to ypur products since they are innovative.
The 12 mm lens that will ship in summer will have a filter thread so that it will be possible to use filters ?

    Thanks

  5. Which mount, Nikon or Canon do you recommend purchasing and using an adapter for m43 and Fuji respectively? If you had 3 camera bodies m43, Fuji, and Sony FE what mount should I get to work on all three, knowing I’d need to purchase an adapter?

    • Hi Arthur,

Canon/Nikon does not make a difference. Both of them works fine in M43/Fuji/Sony FE with an adapter.

  6. Did you test Laowa 15mm f/4 Wide Angle 1:1 Macro and LAOWA 60mm f/2.8 2:1 Ultra-Macro Lens at maximum resolution? Will it work with Canon 5ds? Are there pictures with this camera? Sorry for my English.

    • Hi Alexey, Definitely. A lot of our customers are Canon 5d3 users and have extensively tested our 15mm and 60mm lenses.

  7. will the 12mm be able to produce macro like the 15? will the 12 be sharper for landscape/sunset? which would you recommend for someone who would like to do both landscape and macro?
have you tested astrophotography on the 15mm even though it is a f4 lens?
    thanks

    • Our upcoming 12mm is not a 1:1 macro like the 15mm. It will be sharper for landscape. If you wanna both landscape and macro, Our 15mm f/4 is your top choice. For astrophotography, I am sure 12mm is the top choice.

  8. The Sony FE version, has the same distance from back of lense to sensor or is a re-disigned optical project for Sony mount?

  9. is it possible to use the 15mm f.4 lens on my omd e-m5 with the right Adapter and without large loss ?

  10. Will the Laowa 15mm wide angle macro lens ever be constructed withautomatic aperture control?

  11. If I bought the sony fe mount version could i use it with my sony nex e mount cameras? Would that make it effectively a 21mm? Thanks

  12. I am a landscape astrophotographer, specializing in up close/milky way photography. Most fast/wide-angle lenses fail because of excessive COMA. PLEASE comment on COMA ABBERATION associated with your lenses, particularly near the edge of the frame, with full-frame sensors.

  13. 12mm f2.8 and 15mm f4 are design just for full frame or crop sensor??.i mean focal lens on my dx is 18mm f2.8(12mm f2.8) and about 22mm ( 15mm f4).
